York defeated Sterling 7-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Sterling, Kan. with a commanding second half performance. York scored six second-half goals, while Sterling managed a single goal despite nine total shots. York’s offensive pressure resulted in 36 shots, with 21 on target.
The match between Sterling and York commenced with Sterling’s defensive efforts being tested early. Goalkeeper Bella Duckworth made multiple saves, including a key stop on a penalty kick by Cara Van Der Straate at the 23rd minute, maintaining a narrow contest. Despite these efforts, York University managed to score the first goal of the match through Gracie Reynolds in the 22nd minute.
Sterling’s offensive opportunities were limited, with Francesca Vilca and Cheyenne Siler attempting shots, one of which was saved by York’s goalkeeper. As the first half concluded, Sterling trailed the Panthers with a score of 1-0, despite Duckworth’s impressive performance in goal.
The second half began with York quickly extending their lead through a goal by Samantha Bayer in the 47th minute, assisted by Maisie Briscoe. Despite a series of saves by Sterling’s goalkeeper, Duckworth, York continued to capitalize on their offensive momentum, netting additional goals by Lois Mattock and Reynolds, bringing the score to 4-0 by the 58th minute.
Sterling’s Jessica Gautreau took a corner kick in the 56th minute, but York maintained pressure, scoring twice more in rapid succession, including a penalty kick by Cristina Prats. York further extended their lead with a goal from Ellie Reynolds in the 71st minute. However, Sterling broke through in the 77th minute when Gautreau scored, marking Sterling’s sole goal of the match. The half concluded with Sterling trailing 7-1, despite increased offensive efforts late in the game.
Gautreau scored one goal and led the Sterling team with four shots, two of which were on goal. Duckworth finished the match with 14 saves, facing 21 shots in total. Siler and Sheridan Nguyen each recorded a shot on goal, contributing to the team’s offensive efforts.
Sterling holds a record of 2-9-1 overall and 0-6-1 in conference play. The Lady Warriors are set to take on Friends University (5-3-3, 3-1-2) in Wichita, Kan. on Saturday, Oct. 11.
