SALINA, Kan. – Sterling College track and field continues to show improvements as the season progresses with the latest meet being the Coyote Classic hosted by Kansas Wesleyan on Friday and Saturday, April 17-18.
The men posted four new personal bests two in the field events and two in the throws.
In the throws, Tod Mastin threw a new personal best in the javelin with a throw of 42.28m (138-08) to place eighth. Also competing in the javelin was James Dickerman who placed second in the event with a throw of 48.55m (159-03).
Nazar Haydon also posted a personal best in the shot put with a mark of 9.18m (30-1.5) to finish 25th. Also competing in the shot were Blake Robertson, Keaton Miller and Brayden Kermode who placed seventh, 13th and 20th with throws of 14.06m (46-1.5), 12.54m (41-1.75) and 10.81m (35-5.75), respectively.
Robertson also had success in the discuss where he finished third with a heave of 45.16m (148-02). Calen Wente was right behind him with a throw of 41.35m (135-08). Also competing in the discuss were Kermode and Miller who finished 18th and 19th with marks of 33.38m (109-06) and 32.27m (105-10), respectively.
The crew also competed in the hammer throw with Roberston leading the way with a throw of 46.89m (153-10) to finish fifth. Wente threw 40.18m (131-10) to place 11th, Kermode finished 18th with a mark of 37.82m (124-01) and Miller rounded out the field with a throw of 35.28m (115-09) to finish 24th.
In the jumps, Charles Jones led the way with a first-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.93m (6-04) and finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 14.16m (46-5.5). He also led the Warriors in the long jump, finishing fourth with a leap of 6.93m (22-09). Also competing in the long jump were Kevin Jones and Cameron Salazar who placed ninth and 10th with marks of 6.03m (19-9.5) and 5.88m (19-3.5), respectively.
The Warriors continued to post personal bests on the track. David Sulivan ran a personal best time in the 400m dash finishing 16th with a time of 52.81. Jacob Tonne also posted a personal best time in the 800m run where he ran a time of 2:07.31 to place 27th. Also competing in the 800m run was Wesley Brantley who ran a time of 2:15.33 to finish 36th.
In the sprints, Haydon led the way with a seventh-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 23.27. He also led the Warriors in the 100m dash with a time of 11.30 to place 15th. Also competing in the 100m dash was Salazar who ran a time of 11.83 to finish 22nd.
On the women’s side, three Lady Warriors posted personal best times on the track. Both Claire Miller and Lydia Nelson had personal best times in the 5000m run. Miller ran a time of 20:43.21 to finish eighth and Nelson finished 12th with a time of 22:30.97.
Also posting a personal best time on the track was Audrey Blake, who ran a time of 6:31.04 in the 1500m run to place 18th. Janie Perico also competed in the 1500m run where she finished 15th with a time of 5:51.23.
In the field events, Belle Barnett continues to dominate the high jump. She won the even with a jump of 1.67m (5-5.75).
Sterling will be back in action at the Fort Hays State University Alex Francis Classic on Thursday, April 23.
