NORTH NEWTON, Kan – Sterling College fell to Bethel College, 78-62, on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Sterling recorded 29 rebounds and 15 points off turnovers in the contest.
Sterling opened the first half with strong offensive plays, highlighted by Camren Johnson‘s early two-pointer. The team demonstrated resilience with crucial defensive stops, including a steal by Jaivion Reed, which contributed to consistent scoring. Julian Smith‘s performance was pivotal, as he not only assisted crucial plays but also closed the half with a three-pointer in the final seconds.
Despite these efforts, Bethel College maintained a narrow lead, capitalizing on a full court press that forced the Warriors into turnovers by shooting a high percentage from the three-point line. The half ended with Sterling trailing Bethel, 42-34, as both teams geared up for the next stretch of play.
Bethel began the second half with a series of successful plays, expanding their lead. Sterling responded with contributions from Smith and Chris Drake, cutting into the deficit at various points. However, turnovers and Bethel’s effective shooting from beyond the arc maintained the pressure.
Sterling managed to find success in the paint with Reed and Ziri Blackwood contributing to the scoring. The visiting team showed resilience, but Bethel maintained control, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and bench contributions. The half ended with Bethel leading 74-62, securing a win with a final score of 78-62.
Drake posted a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Smith led Sterling in scoring with 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Reed contributed 11 points and added two assists. Joseph Oparaeke was perfect from the field, scoring six points on 3-for-3 shooting and collecting five rebounds.
Sterling (6-6, 3-3) next game will be against Ottawa University (7-4, 4-2) in Ottawa, Kan. on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m.
