Sterling Men Fall to Saint Mary in first Game Back from Break

STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College fell to the University of Saint Mary 78-59 on Saturday, Jan. 3 at the Gleason Center. Despite forcing 17 turnovers and recording 10 steals, the Warriors could not overcome their opponent’s dominant play in the paint, where the Spires scored 54 points.

Sterling began the first half with a brief lead, marked by Chris Drake‘s jumper assisted by Jaivion Reed at 17:26. Despite several defensive rebounds and a couple of steals, the team struggled to convert on field goal attempts, shooting 7-for-32 for the half.

The visiting Saint Mary capitalized on their opportunities, quickly pulling ahead. Their offensive efforts were bolstered by points in the paint, accumulating a significant advantage there, which contributed to their lead. Sterling managed to narrow the deficit slightly towards the end of the half with a three-pointer from Julian Smith assisted by Reed at 00:35.

The half ended with Sterling trailing, 37-23.

The Warriors began the second half with Reed scoring early with a jumper, narrowing the margin. Ziri Blackwood added momentum with a successful three-pointer, assisted by Reed, maintaining competitive pressure against the Spires. However, the visitors capitalized on their defensive rebounds and fast breaks to gradually extend their lead.

Despite Sterling’s efforts, including Smith’s consistent scoring contributions, the visitors maintained control with key plays from Joe Clark and Kaeden Bonner. The half closed with Sterling trailing, as the Spires led 78-59 at the end of the half.

Julian Smith led the team with 17 points, including two 3-pointers, and added three assists and three steals. Blackwood contributed 16 points while also recording two steals. Drake contributed seven points and 11 rebounds, dominating the boards with six offensive and five defensive rebounds. Reed added eight points and facilitated the offense with four assists.

Sterling () will take on Friends University (12-2, 7-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. for Community Night where Sterling College will recognize Sterling High School’s 2025 State Champions.

The debate and forensics team along with Chelsea Brown (tennis) and Julia Kilgore (track) will be recognized at halftime of the women’s team and the boy’s basketball team and football team will be recognized at halftime of the men’s game. USD376 students will receive free admission while community members will get discounted tickets for $5 at the gate (cash or credit).
