Kansas Wesleyan University defeated Sterling College 6-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 15 in Salina, Kan. Sterling’s goalkeeper, Bella Duckworth, made nine saves, including five in the first half, but the KWU offense proved to be too much, scoring five goals in the second half.
The first half began with Sterling facing early pressure as Kansas Wesleyan scored in the opening seconds, taking a 1-0 lead. Duckworth made several key saves, including stops against shots from Rylie Moreno-Rojas and Brooklyn Velotta, to keep Sterling within striking distance. Despite a corner kick opportunity from Jessica Gautreau at the 34th minute, Sterling was unable to find the back of the net.
Sterling’s defensive efforts, highlighted by Duckworth’s saves, limited further damage and maintained the scoreline as the half closed. The half ended with Sterling trailing 1-0, setting the stage for a competitive second half.
Sterling began the second half with an attempt on goal by Gautreau, which was blocked, setting the tone for a competitive second half. Despite a solid defensive effort, the Coyotes were able to capitalize first, with Velotta scoring in the 54th minute to extend their lead.
Cheyenne Siler tested the opposition with two shots on goal in quick succession, both saved by the KWU goalkeeper, Isabella Galvan. However, the home team found the net again in the 72nd minute, followed by two more goals in the 80th and 83rd minutes. Kansas Wesleyan closed the half with a final goal in the 88th minute, resulting in a 6-0 victory.
Siler made both of her shots on goal, showing accuracy in her attempts. Gautreau added to the offensive pressure with one shot during the match. Duckworth recorded nine saves, facing 15 shots and conceding six goals.
Sterling holds a record of 2-11-1 overall and is 0-8-1 in conference play. Next up, the Warriors will take on Evangel University (6-6-1, 4-4) at home on Friday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
