York secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Sterling on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Sterling, Kan. The Panthers dominated with 28 total shots, 18 of which were on target, while Sterling managed 13 shots with eight on goal. The match saw York University break through with a first-half goal and add three more in the second half. Sterling’s goalkeeper recorded 14 saves despite the loss.

The first half began with Sterling creating early opportunities, including a header by Ruben Guzman in the fifth minute that hit the post following a corner kick from Jonathan Torres. Sterling’s defense, anchored by goalkeeper Cassidy Kelly, faced consistent pressure but managed to keep the game tight, with Kelly making multiple saves against the Panthers’ attempts.

Despite Sterling’s efforts to capitalize on their chances, including shots by Chimela Orji and Torres, York University broke through in the 39th minute with a goal by Sergio Bueno. The half concluded with Sterling striving to equalize, but they entered halftime trailing 1-0.

The second half began with York University extending their lead early as Tomas Viralhadas found the back of the net in the 47th minute, assisted by Asaph Achero. Sterling goalkeeper Kelly made several crucial saves, including shots from Dominic Griffin and Joao Vitor Tavares, to keep the deficit from growing further.

Despite Sterling’s efforts, including shots by Darragh Synnott and Jose Pacheco, the Panthers continued to capitalize on their opportunities. James McAlister further increased the visitors’ lead with a goal at the 72nd minute. Tim Schafer added another for York University in the 79th minute, again assisted by Achero, making the score 4-0.

Sterling continued to press forward, with attempts from Michael Kyalo and Floyd Ransom, but the Panthers’ defense held firm to maintain their lead. The period concluded with York University securing a 4-0 victory over Sterling.

Kelly, in goal for Sterling, recorded 14 saves across the match, facing 18 shots on target. Orji made an impact with two shots, both of which were on goal. Pacheco attempted to break through the opponent’s defense with three shots, managing one on target. Torres added pressure in the midfield, contributing three shots, with two being on target.

With the loss, the Warriors move to 3-7-1 overall, 1-6 in conference. They will face Friends University (1-9-1, 1-4-1) in Wichita, Kan. on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 4:30 p.m.
