Sterling fell to Bethel 2-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 1 in North Newton, Kan. Bethel secured the victory with a second-half goal, overcoming Sterling’s early lead. Sterling’s goalkeeper made eight saves to keep the match tight, but Bethel’s persistent offense, totaling 27 shots, ultimately prevailed.

The first half opened with a strong defensive presence from Sterling as Elysa Apen took position in goal. Sterling faced early pressure from Bethel College, who attempted several shots, including a blocked attempt by Malayasia Larque and another wide effort by Taylor Andrew. The Threshers broke through in the 9th minute when Larque scored, assisted by Andrew, to put the home team ahead.

Sterling responded strategically as their defense managed to withstand further attacks, including a save by Apen from a Madison Davis shot. In the 33rd minute, Jessica Gautreau capitalized on an opportunity to equalize the match, bringing the score to 1-1. Both teams continued to contest possession and create opportunities, but the half closed with the score level, maintaining a competitive edge going into the break.

The second half began with Bethel College extending their lead through an early goal by Melanie Ruiz at the 46:26 mark. Sterling responded with a shot attempt by Francesca Vilca at 50:00, which went wide left. Apen played a critical role, making multiple saves, including stopping a penalty kick by Madison Davis at 56:26, keeping Sterling within reach.

Despite opportunities, including a corner kick by Gautreau at 77:31 and a shot attempt shortly after, Sterling was unable to capitalize. Apen continued her strong performance with several more saves, maintaining the pressure on the Threshers. The game concluded with Sterling trailing 2-1, as Bethel College held on to their lead.

Apen made eight saves in goal, including seven in the second half, for Sterling. Gautreau scored the only goal for Sterling, finding the net on one of her three shots. Vilca contributed with two shots, although none were on target.

With the loss Sterling fell to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play. The Lady Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Sterling, Kan. as they take on Avila University (4-3-2, 2-0-2) at 1 p.m.
