Steven H. FairchildHutchinson, KS

Steven H. Fairchild, 74, of Hutchinson, died March 24, 2026, at Brookdale Senior Living in Shawnee, KS. He was born December 29, 1951, in Larned, KS to Harry and Lena (Dirks) Fairchild. In April 2025, Steven was diagnosed with Stage 4 esophageal cancer and spent his final months close to family.

Steven is a graduate of Larned High School. He worked for Dillons for 49 years, from 1968 to 2017. Steven began as a sacker and carryout and worked his way up to night stocker. He was known for his strong work ethic and dedication throughout his career.

Steven enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. He liked golfing, collecting coins, and studying astronomy. He enjoyed playing Nintendo and watching television shows such as Manifest and Star Trek. He was also a fan of Stephen King novels and the music of Celtic Woman. Steven had a fondness for the simple things in life, including comforting meals and desserts.

He appreciated family history and cherished many items passed down through the Dirks family. Steven also took pride in building furniture himself, including a coffee table and end tables during his high school years.

Steven is survived by his sister, Ann Boman of Kansas City; his nephew, Ryan Boman of Kansas City; his great-nephew, Ross Boman of Hutchinson; and his great-niece, Kyria Ann Fankhauser (Sam) of Lenexa, who were like a son and grandchildren to him. He also shared many years of friendship with Rick and Jo Wooderson, Cody Yutzy, and Becky Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Janice; and his brother-in-law, Warren.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th Avenue, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.
