Shirley Louise Leroy, 75 of Chanute, Kansas passed away at KU Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
Shirley was born on September 22, 1950, in Iola, Kansas to Ira and Minnie Mae (Gerdsen) Smoot. Shirley attended grade school in La Harpe, and then graduated high school in Colony with the class of 1968. On April 27, 1981, Shirley married Gary Leroy. The two were married 31 years until his passing on October 21, 2012.
Shirley worked at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center 14 years before retiring in 2013. During her free time, Shirley loved to sew. She was also an avid sports fan. She never missed a game when her beloved, Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas Jayhawks were on. Shirley was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church for many years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Leroy, brother, Clyde Gerdsen, sister, Marcella Smoot, her parents, and 8 step-siblings.
Shirley is survived by her children, Shelly Wilson, Suzy Cassingham, Shawna Zurn, and Travis (Hannah) Leroy, sisters, Aleta (David) Flaherty, and Stella Higginbotham, brother, Dean Smoot, brother-in-law, Bob Leroy, and sister-in-law, Glenda LeRoy 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Memorials can be made in Shirley’s name to the Zion Lutheran Church. A Celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 30th at 1:00pm with inurnment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
