1933-2026

Robert L. Farney, 92, died May 11, 2026, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. He was born September 5, 1933, the son of Harvey and Viola (Kleck) Farney, in Rural Reno County.

Bob graduated from Nickerson High School in 1951. After high school he was drafted in the United States Army, serving in Korea as a medical aide. Upon returning, he farmed on the family farm. Bob received an LPN degree from McPherson College. After graduation he nursed at Lyons Hospital for 20 years, retiring at the age of 79.

Bob was a member of Sterling Evangelical Bible Church serving in various ministries. He was involved in community service with Sheep and Wool Growers, and served on the Mennonite Friendship Communities, Board of Directors.

On August 14, 1955, Bob married Lavonne Zimmerman. They lived on a farm southwest of Sterling, where they worked the land together and served in the community and church. They spent four years (1961-1965) at Salem Children’s Home, near Flanagan, IL, with their children, Jack, Tyler and Gayle. They helped care for needy children before returning to their farm.

Bob is survived by: his children, Jack (Kay) Farney of Sterling, Gayle (Rick) Fehr of Omaha, NE; daughter-in-law, Keva Farney of North Newton; grandchildren, Garet (Jaymelynn) Farney and Logan (Megan) Farney, both of Sterling, Chelsi (Zack) Marshall of Eureka, Wyatt (Laurel) Farney of Elbing, Yance (Elaine) Farney of Kechi, Rob (Abby) Fehr of Omaha, and Nate (Laura) Fehr of Bentonville, AR; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Donna Broadus of South Hutchinson, Shirley Marlow of Aurora, CO; sisters-in-law, Greta Zimmerman of South Hutchinson, LaVonne Farney of Salina; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by; his parents; wife; son, Tyler Farney; brother, James Farney; and granddaughter, Marshay Farney.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Sterling Evangelical Bible Church, 3017 N. Sterling Rd, Sterling, with Pastor Charles Busch officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2026, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Sterling Evangelical Bible Church of Mennonite Friendship Communities, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
