Reg Jones
1953-2026

Reginald Dean “Reg” Jones, 72, of Hutchinson, passed away on April 7, 2026, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita. He was born June 3, 1953, in Pratt, KS, to Carl V. and Norma J. (Kendall) Jones.

Reg graduated from Great Bend High School in 1971. He received an Associate of Arts Degree from Barton County Community College in 1973 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering Technology from Kansas State University in 1976.

He worked for the city of Hutchinson for 28 years beginning in 1987 as an Engineering Technician and became Assistant Wastewater Treatment Superintendent in 1988. He was promoted to Utilities Director in 1990 and then to Director of Public Works in 2006, a role he held for 11 years before retiring in 2015. He was a member of the American Water Works Association, the Water Environment Federation and the American Public Works Association. He was a 1991 graduate of the Leadership Hutchinson Program and completed the MiniMPA program through the Hugo Wall School of Urban and Public Affairs at Wichita State University in 2002. During his career he oversaw several city functions including, water treatment and production, wastewater treatment, flood control, and public works maintenance to name a few. His proudest career accomplishment was the new water treatment facility at 23rd and Severance streets.

Reg was an avid K-State Wildcat fan, had season tickets to home football and basketball games and was recognized by the KSU Foundation Presidents Club for his leadership and support of Kansas State University. He also enjoyed camping and boating at Kanopolis lake, listening to classic Rock music, golfing, running, Domino’s Pizza, and daily strolls through Carey Park.  Most of all, Reg was a family man, assisting when Tyler was in Scouts, coaching his children’s youth sports teams, attending Brecken’s father/daughter dances and spending time with his grandchildren.

On June 17, 1978, he married Kay Kimsey in Medicine Lodge, KS. They were married for 16 years and had two children, Tyler and Brecken. Following their divorce, they remained close friends.

Reg is survived by his children, Tyler Jones (Kate) of Wichita, Brecken Klein (Weston) of Manhattan; grandchildren, Brantley, Kanton, and Gideon Klein of Manhattan; former wife, Kay Kimsey Jones of Hutchinson; fur baby, Missy; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Elliott Chapel. Attendees are encouraged to wear K-State purple.

Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, with the family present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
