Patricia “Pat” J. (Bastain) Nichols KaveneyHutchinson, KS

Patricia J. “Pat” (Bastian) Nichols Kaveney, 97, died January 19, 2026, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born March 27, 1928, at her grandmother’s home in rural Hodgeman County, to William McKinley “Kinney” and Ethel Marie (Courtney) Bastian.

Pat graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1946. While living in Hutchinson, she worked at Decker & Mattison for 18 years.

On August 12, 1948, she married Loren “Nick” Nichols, in Hutchinson. After raising three children together, Diana (Deegie), Steve, and Jo Lynne, they later divorced.   On May 22, 1981, she married William “Bill” E. Kaveney, in Las Vegas, NV.  He died November 19, 2012.

Pat is survived by:  her children, Diana G. (Deegie) Wray (Greg) and Steve Nichols (Cindy), all of Hutchinson; stepdaughters, Karen Mues (Steve) and Lynda Dixon (David); stepson-in-law, Jim Russell; grandchildren, Jeffrey Wray (Trisha), Cedar Rapids, IA, Ryan Wray (Lindsay), Buhler, Nichole Erickson, Lewisville, TX, Stephanie Cadwallader (Jeff), Paso Robles, CA, Matthew Nichols, Valencia, CA, Trisha Jennings (Kit), Joplin, MO, Joshua O'Neal (Tzvi), Branson, MO, Eric Pham of Hutchinson; step-grandchildren, Timothy Britton (Ashley), Kristin Britton,  Bryan Mues (Janesa), Jessica Mues, Stephanie Eloff (Dan), Kyle Zumbehl (Krisie), Hayley Dixon, Caitlynne Dixon; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by:  her parents; sister, Betty Jo Vesper; brother, William Charles Bastian; husband, William “Bill” Kaveney; Deegie, Steve, and Jo Lynne’s father, Loren “Nick” Nichols; daughter, Jo Lynne O’Neal; and stepdaughter, Cindy Russell.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Elliott Chapel, with grandson, Ryan Wray officiating.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.  Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2026, at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.

The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Hospice House for all the care and love they gave our mom, Pat Kaveney.  You all became a part of our family.
