Norma Ruth Robinette, 94, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and the faith that guided her throughout her life.
Born in 1932 in Paducah, Kentucky, Ruth never lost pride in her Kentucky roots. She often shared stories of her childhood growing up during the Great Depression, including one of her earliest memories: being rescued by boat during the historic Paducah Flood of 1937. It was a story she loved to tell, connecting generations of her family to the resilience and history that shaped her entire life.
After getting married in Detroit, Michigan and moving to Chanute, Kansas, Ruth was instrumental in establishing a Church of Christ congregation in her new community. Determined to share her faith with others, she and her husband, Gene, opened their home for worship services and fellowship. Ruth also regularly visited others in their homes, sharing God's word and bringing comfort, encouragement, and companionship to those she met. What began as gatherings in their home eventually grew into a congregation with its own church building, a milestone Ruth was proud to help make possible. Her steadfast faith remained a cornerstone of her life and an inspiration to all who knew her.
For many years, Ruth worked at Hutton Elementary School and Chanute High School, where she baked fresh bread and treats daily for students and staff. She loved being involved in school activities and especially enjoyed spirit weeks and holiday celebrations. Through her work, she touched the lives of countless children and colleagues with her caring nature and warm smile.
Ruth was also an exceptional seamstress and crocheter. She lovingly created beautiful clothing for family members and grandchildren, often turning simple materials into treasured keepsakes. Her crochet work showcased remarkable artistry and patience, and she delighted in creating personalized gifts that reflected her love for each recipient. Many family members and friends will continue to cherish the handmade treasures she crafted with such care and skill.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Robinette; and her siblings Robert Sutton, J.L. Tidwell, Gloria Freitas, Shirley Cameron and Randall Tidwell.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Tava Willis and her son-in-law Ed Willis; her grandchildren, Tava Blaine Bridges, Evan Willis, and Ashton Willis; her great-grandchildren, Arianna, Waylon, Wyatt, and Weston Willis; her siblings Lynn Wood, Kenneth Wood, Barbera Young and Lana Pontious and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, cherished friends, and her beloved church family.
Those who knew Ruth will remember her playful spirit and her joy of laughter and the company of those around her. While her family mourns her loss, they celebrate a life well lived and find comfort in the legacy she leaves behind.
She will be deeply missed, held dear in memories, and forever loved.
