Lois M. Schroeder
1934-2026

Lois Marie (Nickel) Schroeder was born May 29, 1934, to Arnold and Lena (Goossen) Nickel at the Bethesda Hospital, Goessel, KS. Lois died peacefully on June 7,2026 at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Schroeder.

Lois was raised in a family of 8 children. She lived in Goessel until the age of 12 when she moved with her family to Oakley, Kansas. Lois was baptized May 25, 1947, and became a member of Mingo Meadow Mennonite Church She lived on a farm and graduated from Oakley High School in May, 1952. She attended Bethel College for one year.

Lois Nickel met Raymond Schroeder while she was living in Newton Kansas. They married in 1956 and lived for a year in Newton before moving onto the farm in Buhler, Kansas. Lois and Ray were blessed with three children- David, Carol and Kay.

Lois held several jobs outside the home being a classroom aide, secretarial positions at the church and in the Buhler schools, and various positions at the Buhler State Bank. In 1990 she became the branch manager when she opened the Mid-Kansas Credit Union in Buhler, Kansas. Then in 1996 Lois got involved with acting as a Power of Attorney for elderly in the Buhler community for about 20 years.

Lois enjoyed many volunteer activities: cashier at Etcetera Shop, sewing circle member, Buhler Mennonite Funeral committee member, Buhler Mennonite choir, and Historical Committee chair for Buhler Mennonite Church. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Lois had two bouts with cancer and always faced it with a positive attitude and strong faith in God.

Preceding her in death besides her husband include: her son, David Schroeder; parents, Arnold and Lena Nickel; siblings, Irene Stoecker, Roy Nickel, Joan Snider, Elma Becker, John Nickel, and Bob Nickel.

Survivors include, her daughter-in-law, Marlene Schroeder, Buhler; daughters, Carol (Randall) Goering, Newton and Kay (Greg) Heikes, Kingman; 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Julie Whitman; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm, Friday, June 12, 2026 at Buhler Mennonite Church. The Memorial Service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, June 13, at the Church, with Pastor Willmar T. Harder officiating. Private burial will take place at the Buhler Municipal Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Buhler Mennonite Church, in care of Buhler Mortuary, PO Box 589, Buhler, KS 67522.
