Leona Marie (Gibbs) Smedley, 86, of rural Thayer, Kansas, passed away on September 19, 2026, at Wilson Medical Center.
Leona was born on February 14, 1940, in Neodesha, Kansas. She married George “Sonny” Smedley on May 28th, 1956, and they made their home in Thayer.
Leona is survived by her daughters, Debra Mahaffey and her husband, Dan, and Sandra Smedley; her son, David Smedley and his wife, Tonya; four grandchildren, Ashley Mahaffey, Matt Mahaffey, Brianne O’Brien (Smedley), and Trey Smedley; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sonny; her daughter, Pamela Smedley; and her granddaughter, Cristy Wiles, and one great granddaughter.
During the early years of her marriage, Leona worked in restaurants and also did painting and wallpapering. She later went to work for Sand’s Tools in Neodesha, where she remained until her retirement.
Leona especially treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed teaching them how to cook and sew, and she never wanted to miss an event in which they were participating.
A quiet and humble person, Leona truly valued her friendships. Although she preferred to keep to herself and never wanted attention, she had a heart of gold and was always willing to help others. “Grandma Smedley’s” baby quilts, dishpan cookies, sugar cookies, and, of course, her maple rings will be remembered throughout the community for years to come. Over the years, she made hundreds of blankets and thousands of cookies, never charging a dime for any of them. Her reward was the joy she received from giving to others.
The many calls and visits Leona received during her illness were a true blessing to her, and she deeply cherished each one.
Visitation will be held at the Thayer Christian Church on Sunday, September 27, 2026 with the family greeting friends from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. A Celebration of Life Service will immediately follow at 3:00pm. Following the service everyone is invited to the Community Building in the park to share stories and fellowship. Memorial contributions can be made in Leona’s name to the Thayer Christian Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home.
