Joan Clare Hunsberger Chance, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, in Houston, Texas.
Joan was born on November 1, 1934, in Mount Hope, Kansas, to Raymond Percy Hunsberger and Elizabeth Warren McGeorge Hunsberger. She was delivered by her grandfather, Dr. H. G. Hunsberger in his home. Joan grew up with a deep appreciation for learning and literature, interests that would remain with her throughout her life. She was a member of the Mount Hope United Methodist Church.
In 1952, Joan graduated from Mount Hope High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Kansas State University in 1955, and was a member of the honor society, Phi Kappa Phi, and the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Kansas State. Joan shared her love of language and learning as a substitute English teacher, encouraging students through her patience, knowledge, and thoughtful approach to education.
On July 24, 1955, Joan married her high school sweetheart, Billy Junior Chance, at the Federated Church in Mount Hope, Kansas.
Joan found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a remarkable talent for creating intricate miniatures, enjoyed the artistry of embroidery, and was an avid reader with a lifelong love of literature. Her creativity, curiosity, and gentle spirit touched everyone who knew her.
Above all, Joan cherished her family. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Bill Chance (Candy), Mark Chance (Kathy), and Jennifer Chance Roden (Doug); her brother, Jon Hunsberger; and her beloved grandchildren, Zachary Roden, Nathaniel Roden, Gwendolyn Roden, Elizabeth Roden, Nicholas Chance, and Lee Chance. She took great pride in watching her family grow and treasured every opportunity to spend time with them.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Percy Hunsberger and Elizabeth Warren McGeorge Hunsberger; her husband of 53 years, Billy Chance; and her beloved grandson, William Chance.
Joan will be remembered for her quiet strength, kind heart, love of learning, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her legacy lives on through the lives she influenced, the traditions she cherished, and the love she shared so generously. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A graveside Celebration of Life for Joan is planned for Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 10 o’clock in the morning at Mount Hope Greeley Township Cemetery, located on 93rd Street North, 1/2 mile west of its intersection with 279th Street West.
