1960-2026
Gregory Laine Plenert was born on November 12, 1960 in Council Grove, KS to Charles and Jenny Lee (Unruh) Plenert. The family moved to Hillsboro when he was a young boy where he grew up helping on their dairy farm north of town. He attended Hillsboro schools and was active in FFA where he held several offices and among some of his awards was the Star Farmer. After graduation he continued working on the dairy farm with his parents and building up his own herd eventually taking over the operation. During this time he was also a local seed dealer and involved in Young Farmers and the Dairy Association.
On September 10,1983 he was united in marriage to Robin Hill in Hillsboro at Zion Lutheran Church. He was later baptized and became a confirmed member. Unto this union a son and daughter were born. With hopes of more family time after the children came they transitioned from the dairy to a cow/calf operation raising hay and grains. He also began driving feed delivery truck where he enjoyed seeing the sights of other farm operations, meeting new people and customers, and gaining new friendships until an injury at work left him with a progressive life long disability. Already having been taught the value of hard work and the love of farm life, with Greg’s guidance Robin and the children along with occasional help from family and friends continued the family farm.
Greg had a love for the outdoors if he wasn’t farming and tending to livestock he enjoyed trapping, hunting and fishing. Greg looked most forward to the yearly deer hunting season which became a tradition with his father, father in law, brother in laws, a few good friends and eventually included his own son and daughter. He had an interest in collecting yellow Minneapolis-Moline tractors and machinery. He also had a short stint of drag racing and demo cars. Greg loved spending time with his wife and kids. There are many memories of short camping trips, boyscout/girlscout events, kids pedal pulls, bbqs and playing outside on the farm.
Greg was most proud of his children. He had a constant interest in what they were doing and followed them to as many school activities and sporting events as he was able. He was extremely proud of his children's accomplishments, Dusten finishing college, taking over the farm and getting married and Callie graduating high school and going on to pursue a 4 year degree in nursing. He was also proud of the addition of a granddaughter who brought him much joy to spend time with.
Greg had a kind heart and was a friend to all he met. Greg was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cared deeply for his family. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends. Greg passed away Thursday, February 19th, 2026 at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS. He was preceded in death by his father Charles, brother Gaylon Plenert and father in law Marvin Hill. He is survived by his wife Robin, daughter Callie, son Dusten (Danielle), and granddaughter Dantlie all of Hillsboro, mother Jenny Lee, mother in law Barbara Hill, sister in laws Barb (Joe) Alvarez, Leslie (Daryl) Schlesener, and brother in law Terry Hill. As well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and their families.
Family and friends may gather for visitation at 10:00am Saturday, February 28th at Zion Lutheran Church Hillsboro followed by 11:00am funeral service and burial.
