Douglas “Doug” Bruce Miller, 77, passed away, surrounded by family, on January 10, 2026, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Doug was born on April 12, 1948, in Bremerhaven, Germany, to Donald L. and Evelynn M. (Lanning) Miller.
Doug attended many military grade schools and graduated from Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1966. After high school, Doug enlisted in the United States Army Reserve, where he served as a Military Police Specialist. In 1969, he graduated from Hutchinson Junior College with an Associate degree in Criminal Justice. He then began his long career as a police officer in McPherson, Kansas.
Doug was united in marriage to Linda L. Hawkins on May 29, 1970, in Hutchinson, Kansas. The marriage dissolved in 1999.
Doug then met and fell in love with Bonita “Bonnie” Bowen. Doug and Bonnie were united in marriage on April 8, 2000, in Muscatine, Iowa. This blended family was fortunate to share 6 wonderful children.
Doug is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Bonnie Miller of Moundridge, KS. Children, Brent Bowen (Leslie) of Nampa, ID, Monica Miller of McPherson, KS, Tira Bowen of Wichita, KS, Preston Miller (Becky) of Durham, NC, Heather Curle (Lee) of Goddard, KS, and Ryan Miller of McPherson, KS. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren (Audrey Miller, Darralle Schreiber (Jestin), Sebastian Bowen, Allison Blandin (Tyler), Hailee Curle, and Avik Miller), 4 great-grandchildren, many relatives, a foreign exchange daughter, Yuko, and a host of friends.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents.
Doug worked for the McPherson Police Department for over 30 years and retired as a captain. During his time in the military and with the police force, he participated in shooting competitions, earning many awards and trophies. He enjoyed and was skilled at loading his own ammunition. After his retirement, Doug held part-time positions with Walmart for 10 years and Frank Black Pipe & Supply for 12 years, both in McPherson, KS.
Doug enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life. He was an amateur radio operator, loved fishing, especially bass fishing, and participated in many tournaments. One of his favorite pastimes was golf, and he could often be found on the course. He was a member of the Turkey Creek Golf Club, and he also belonged to the McPherson American Legion Post #24, where he previously volunteered with the Honor Guard.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 10:00 am at New Hope Evangelical Church in McPherson, Kansas. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am with George Bocox officiating, and a light luncheon will be served immediately afterward.
