1958-2026
Donald Marcus Bergkamp II, of Pretty Prairie, Kansas, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, at Ascension Via Christi–St. Francis in Wichita.
Donald was born on March 8, 1958, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Don and Joy Bergkamp. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his older brother, Joseph Bergkamp.
He is survived by his eight siblings: Greg Bergkamp (Carol), Denise Lagaly, Phil Bergkamp (Donna), Michelle Becker, Paul Bergkamp (Karen), Kevin Bergkamp (Donna), Janet Head (Leon), and Stephanie Meyer (Rusty), along with many extended family members who loved him dearly.
Donald’s passion for farming and ranching—especially harvest time—was surpassed only by his love of horses and the annual Pretty Prairie Rodeo held each July in his hometown. He devoted countless hours to the success of the rodeo and, through that dedication, gained a lifetime of memories and friendships.
Donald’s greatest calling was being the “favorite uncle” to his 32 nieces and nephews and 25 great-nieces and great-nephews. His endless kindness and generous heart drew people to him, and he was deeply loved by all who knew him.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the compassionate care Donald received during his final days at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center at Ascension Via Christi–St. Francis.
Services will include a rosary at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Mount Vernon, Kansas followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Kansas.
A memorial has been established with the Pretty Prairie Booster Club to support the annual Pretty Prairie Rodeo, P. O. Box 36, Pretty Prairie, Kansas 67570.
“And on the eighth day, God looked down on His planned paradise and said, ‘I need a caretaker.’ So God made a farmer.”
