Dean met Eva Clarabelle McMinn in 1947 while sleigh riding near the town of Hamlet, NE. Dean and Clarabelle were married on December 23rd, 1948 during an ice storm, on Clarabelle's birthday. As a couple they initially ran a small grocery store before moving to McCook, Nebraska. Two daughters were born to them in McCook, Kathline in 1949, and Marline in 1952. During this time Dean drove a freight truck for Campbells Trucking Company.
In 1956 a family friend informed Dean of a employment opportunity in Hillsboro, KS. The family moved to Hillsboro and Dean began work for Associated Milk Producers Incorporated. He worked as a truck driver picking up milk from dairy farms for the next 14 years. While in Hillsboro a third child was born, Larry Dean in 1962.
Dean worked several other jobs through the following years; He worked for Greeley Gas Company, Hillsboro Industries, Hillsboro Carpet Center, and the City of Hillsboro where he retired in 1994. During his time in Hillsboro he also worked part-time for several local farmers staying close to his farming heritage. Dean also served 28 years as a volunteer fireman for the Hillsboro Fire Department.
