1967-2026

Brian Eugene Burnett, age 58, of Burlington, KS, passed away at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, May 22, 2026. He had just been put in Hospice Care. Brian, Barney or Rub who he was affectionately called was born on July 5, 1967, in Nowata, OK to Jewel M. (Hardrick-Burnett) Anderson and Major Jefferson. Barney never met a stranger and he loved the Lord with his whole heart.

He attended schools in Coffeyville, Ardmore, OK, and Lenapah, OK. While in middle school and high school he ran track and in high school he went to the McFarland Trade School for welding. He graduated from Field Kinley Memorial High School. After he graduated, he went to truck driving school in Chanute, KS. After truck driving school, he married the love of his life Brenda Murray. To this union 4 children were adopted. Kiara, Elijah, Jodeci, and Jemecia Burnett. He became step-father to Jackie, Shannon and Michelle Murray. They later divorced.

Some other places Barney lived in were Wichita, where he worked at Grady Foundry; Plano, TX, where he worked at Braums and the Dallas Morning News Paper; Emporia and Topeka, he worked for the T-Map Program. He attended the Gethsemane Church of God in Christ Worship Center under the pastorate of Elder Raymond Berry. While in Coffeyville, he worked at Spears Manufacturing in Caney, at Emersons Electric in Independence, the Barrel Factory, George’s Cafeteria, Coffeyville Country Club, Flying X Steakhouse and Western Publishing. While in Coffeyville, he was a member of the 1st Church of God in Christ under the pastorate of the late Elder John H. Watson where people really loved the Lord. When he moved to Burlington, in 2008, he attended Burlington United Methodist Church and later became a member through Christian Fellowship where he remained until his homegoing.

Barney was a true Christian and believer of the Gospel of Christ. Barney was preceded in death by his loving parents; two step-fathers, Samuel L. Burnett Sr. and Manuel A. Anderson; two grandchildren, maternal grandparents, Jefferson D. and Tobitha J. Hardrick Sr., brother, Samuel L. (Sonny, Skippy) Burnett Jr., very special niece, TyRhonda NiCole (Bunky) Burrell; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.

Left to cherish his memory, his 4 children, Kirara, Elijah, Jodeci, and Jemecia; step-daughters, Jackie, Shannon and Michelle; 15 grandchildren; 4 sisters, Justina “Tina” Decker, Charlotte Burrell, Donnita Broadway, Jonnita Rogers; only living aunt, Gwendolyn M. Meigs of Denver, CO, and his godmother, Brenda Dent of Bartlesvile, OK; as well as many nieces nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces, great great nephews; and numerous cousins.

His wings were ready, but our hearts weren’t. Take your rest Bubba until we meet again and what a day of rejoicing that will be. We loved you but God loved you more.

Free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty; you’re free at last!

Celebration of life service will be 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Jones Funeral Home, Burlington. Family will greet friends following the service. Family inurnment will take place at a later date in Ketchum, OK.
