Barbara J. Morti, 91, passed away on June 15, 2026, at The Wesley Hester nursing home in Hutchinson, KS. Barbara was born on June 6, 1935, in Wichita, KS, the daughter of James Merle and Ruth Lucille (Miller) Weir.
She attended Cunningham High School and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kansas. She went on to earn her master’s degree in school counseling from Emporia State Teachers College
On May 31, 1957, Barbara married Merrill Jones in Cunningham, KS. They were married for 10 years and lived in Houston, Texas. Merrill died in car accident in 1967 in Texas with two of their children.
Barbara returned to Kansas to be closer to family and taught math at Central Junior High School and Liberty Middle School. On June 13, 1987, Barbara married Eldon T. Morti in Hutchinson. They were married for 26 years before his passing in 2007.
She was a member of the Stonebridge Christian Wwomen’s Association and volunteered for Hospice of Reno County. For several years, she served as a Deacon at Forest Park United Presbyterian Church. Barbara and Eldon also delivered Meals on Wheels. Wednesday morning coffee with close friends was a highlight of her week.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Merrill A. Jones and Eldon T. Morti; brother Larry Weir; son, Merrill J. Jones and daughter, Tracy A. Jones. Barbara is survived by her daughter, Cherie Jones and husband Michael Johnson; stepdaughters, Karen (Richard) Charles, Nancy (Carter) Witt; twin sister, Beverly DeWeese; grandchildren, Manda (Michael) Light, Tyler Charles, Elaine Johnson, Jesse Witt, David Johnson, Hannah (Dalton) Caudill, Levi Witt, Grace Witt; and nine great- grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS with Rev. Dr. Christine Kass officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, KS.
