Lawrence, Kan. – On February 28, the Swedes Tennis Teams traveled east to play Baker University. The Wildcats elected to host at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, with matches beginning at noon on a beautiful day.
The Swede Women reversed their fortunes from Wednesday in doubles, picking up the doubles point with wins at #2 (Makenna Russom, Sr & Karee Adam, Sr; 7-5) and #3 (Elena Jundt, Fr & Meredith Denton, Fr; Default). The Men had harder sledding, only getting a 6-1 win at #3 (Martin Priban, Jr & Santiago Stipanov, Fr). Scores after doubles had the women leading 1-0, the men trailing 0-1.
In singles, the women continued their success, picking up individual wins at #2 (M. Russom), #4 (K. Adam), #5 (E. Jundt) and #6 (M. Denton) for an overall 5-2 team victory. The men were able to reverse course from doubles, picking up wins at #2 (Gustavo Cardoso, Fr), #3 (Diego Bsereni, Jr), #4 (Dylan Gwilt, So), and #6 (San. Stipanov). With those four wins, the men salvaged the day and a 4-3 team victory. The wins raise the women’s non-conference record to 2-3, and the men’s to 3-3.
Coach DeWitt, after the match: “I’m thrilled with our teams today. We came out to play with some absences on both rosters and made no excuses, just went out and found ways to win. Baker came out fighting and our athletes handled it mostly well. I thought the women did a great job taking care of business after a tough day Wednesday. It was fun seeing Makenna pull out that 3rd set win. The men started really slow, but we got some good wins from the middle of our lineup to get the team win there too. We’ve got work to do to polish up before conference starts, but both teams should feel good about themselves today.”
The Swedes return to action with their home and KCAC opener on Tuesday at the Lindquist Tennis Center on the Bethany College campus, weather permitting. Come out and watch in person or follow along online! Go Swedes!
