Kansas City, MO. – The Bethany College women’s basketball team opened KCAC play on the road Saturday evening, falling 80–71 at Avila University in a competitive matchup that featured multiple momentum swings and a strong fourth-quarter surge from the Swedes.
Bethany showcased balanced scoring and a deep bench effort, outscoring Avila 38–16 in bench points while showing resilience late in the game. After trailing by as many as 17 in the third quarter, the Swedes responded with a 23-point fourth quarter—more than any other period—to trim the deficit and finish with strong momentum.
Jae’Mya Lyons led the Swedes with an efficient 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, providing a major spark off the bench and helping Bethany stay within reach throughout the second half. Senior forward Colbi Rignell added 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Halle Jones contributed 9 points and 3 rebounds. Inside, Janae Black-Harmon continued her consistent play, scoring 8 points on 3-of-3 shooting and grabbing a rebound. Paige Martin added 6 points and 4 rebounds, while Ray Richardson, Alea Pinai, and Gabby Goldab each added valuable minutes to round out Bethany’s bench depth.
Bethany moved the ball well offensively, finishing with 14 assists, and protected the basketball effectively with just 10 turnovers, winning the turnover battle and converting 17 points off Avila miscues. The Swedes also went 21-for-25 at the free-throw line (84%), keeping pace during Avila’s runs and fueling their late push.
The Swedes traded baskets early, trailing just 19–18 after the opening frame before Avila used strong second and third quarters to build a double-digit lead. Bethany refused to fold, mounting a compelling comeback in the final 10 minutes led by improved defensive execution and timely scoring from its guards and post players. Despite the loss, Bethany’s balanced production and defensive pressure provide a positive foundation heading into the upcoming conference stretch.
