MCPHERSON, Kan. – On Monday, the JV and Freshman Football teams would be in action, as the JV would host Wellington at McPherson High School, while the Freshman traveled to Buhler.
The Pups would get on the board in the first quarter after a 25-yard touchdown pass from Owen Fetsch to Dean Barragree. In the second quarter, Carter Allen would find Alec Harms for a 28-yard touchdown. Wellington would return an interception for a touchdown and would convert the two-point conversion before Brock Richardson would collect a rushing touchdown to give the Pups an 18-8 lead going into the half.
Wellington would score on their opening possession of the third quarter, but in the fourth, the Pups would add three touchdowns. Devon Huffman would catch passes from Fetsch and Allen, and Brock Richardson would claim the Pups’ final touchdown, as they would go on to win 40-14.
In the Freshman game, Buhler would collect two touchdowns in the first two quarters, converting on all four extra points. They would keep the Pups out of the endzone, shutting out the Pups 28-0.
Freshman Coach David Goerzen said, “Overall, I felt like our kids played well.” He noted, “The offense was not able to get in the endzone. However, they were able to move the ball and put together several great drives. Our defense unfortunately gave up a few big plays which gave Buhler a chance to get up early.
Goerzen concluded by saying, “I was extremely proud of our kids during the second half. They were able to continue to move the ball on offense, and they stepped it up on defense, keeping Buhler scoreless.”
Next Monday, the JV and Freshman will both travel to Mulvane, the freshman will kick off at 5 p.m. The JV contest will begin at 6:30.
