GODDARD, Kan. – It was a difficult weekend for the McPherson Middle School 7th and 8th grade B-Teams, as they challenged themselves against two tough opponents.
The 8th Graders would open with a one-point loss to Maize South 35-34, their second game was another close loss, as they fell 34-28. Coach David Goerzen said, “The guys gave a strong effort today against a couple of tough teams.” He thought the guys showed a lot of resilience against Maize South, he said, “We were down by more than ten points at one time, but were able to fight our way back into the game during the fourth quarter. We even had the ball at the end of the game with a chance to win it with a last second shot. Unfortunately, our attempts failed.”
Coach Goerzen concluded by saying, “It’s good to know our guys will never give up, even when they’re down. The second game was a tougher matchup. We ended up getting down early to Eisenhower, and everytime we seemed to be closing the point gap, they would score. We just made too many mistakes against a good team. Monday night we hope to get back on track when we face Hutchinson.”

The 7th Graders would suffer a 36-15 loss to Maize South, before falling to Goddard Eisenhower 45-17. Head Coach Jay Crawford noted, “We played against two teams that were very aggressive and applied a lot of backcourt pressure.” At times the Pups were able to get the ball into the paint, Crawford mentioned finishing those shots, as well as taking open shots around the perimeter. He concluded by saying, “As always, this group competed and gave good effort.
