McPherson Holds Off York for 82-77 Home Win

McPherson, Kan. – The Bulldogs were at home on Wednesday night to host the York University Panthers. Both teams headed into the contest looking for their second conference win this season.

How it Happened
McPherson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to open the game, with Amyah Williams-Woodmore accounting for all three points. The Bulldogs extended their advantage to seven a few minutes later, highlighted by another Williams-Woodmore layup and a three pointer from Mazien Gillam. After trading baskets, the remainder of the quarter, the Panthers trimmed the deficit to three by closing the frame 4 for 4 from the free-throw line.

The Bulldogs reasserted control in the second quarter, limiting the Panthers to just nine points while scoring 18 of their own. Amaree Henderson finished the quarter with four points and a steal, while Gillian Rodgers also added four points to pace McPherson. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 38 percent from the field and went 5 for 6 at the line. Skylar Bencsek capped the half with a buzzer-beating three, sending McPherson into the break with a 39-28 lead.

Gillam added to the Bulldogs’ lead with four quick points in the opening minute of the third quarter. The Panthers answered with a seven-point run to cut into the deficit, but Rodgers knocked down McPherson’s fourth three of the night to push the lead back up to 14. A 13-0 surge over the final three minutes of the quarter allowed the Bulldogs to take a 65-42 advantage into the final frame.

York mounted a late comeback attempt in the fourth quarter that ultimately fell short. The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs for the first time in the contest, pouring in 35 points to McPherson’s 17. Over the final three minutes, York held McPherson scoreless while going on a 15-point run, missing just one free throw and three-point attempt. Despite the lead being trimmed to just five, McPherson held on to secure an 82-77 victory over the Panthers.

The Bulldogs posted a season high 82 points, led by Amaree Henderson’s 23 points, four steals, three assists, and one block.
