DERBY, Kan. – The McPherson High JV Tennis team battled the windy elements on Tuesday, where they came out with winning records in three of their four matches.

“Even though today was extremely windy at Derby, the guys were able to play through the wind without letting it affect their game too much.” Coach Ricardo Sanchez said.

Ethan Harrington celebrated his birthday with convincing wins, going 3-0 on the day. Sanchez said, “If he can continue practicing and playing with the same intensity from today, his game will flourish.”

Sanchez mentioned Hunter Hiskey also battled well all day, including coming back from behind to win the 5th place match in singles. “Hunter did an excellent job of placing the ball and not going for too much during the points.”

The doubles duo of Kunj Bhakta and Jeremy Elbert had a tough 4-6 loss in the first round, but bounced back to win the rest of their matches, one of which included a 12-10 tiebreaker win in the 5th place match.

Manny Morales and Miles Bauer both played in their very first tournament, as both are first-year players. Coach Sanchez noted, “Although they couldn’t quite pull out a win today, they played better and better with each match. I was really impressed with Manny’s defense on the court and how Miles was all over the net trying to end points. These two will keep improving with each tournament they play in.”

The McPherson JV Tennis team will return to action Tuesday, when they host six other schools at McPherson High School beginning at 3 p.m. The varsity will travel to Andover on Thursday, for a meet set for 3 p.m.
