McPHERSON, Kan. — Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce this week’s Athlete of the week. Ellie Herrera, McPherson High School upcoming sophomore.
The week – Herrera wrapped up a strong freshman season at the Class 4A state track and field meet on May 30 at Wichita State. Herrera was state runner-up as she cleared 5-feet, 6 inches, a mark that would have won Classes 6A, 5A and 2A. This came on the heels of a successful soccer season, where Herrera was the Bullpups’ goalkeeper and helped the team secure a first-round regional bye and regional final appearance.
The season – In addition to being one of the state’s top high jumpers – only six girls cleared 5-6 at the state meet in all classifications – Herrera, who will be a sophomore this upcoming year, also proved to be one of the state’s top goalkeepers. Herrera was named first-team all Class 4-3-2-1A and was named state goalkeeper of the year by the coaches’ association. Herrera was also a second-team all-AVCTL Division 3/4 selection.
