Shawnee, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes travelled to Shawnee, Kan. to take part in the Top Gun Midwest College Classic. The Swedes played a total of four game with two each on Friday, February 27, and Saturday, February 28.
GAME 1: SWEDES 0, WARRIORS 6
The Swedes opened with the No. 11 Midland University Warriors. Kyson Vap was the lone Swede to record a hit in the contest. Jordyn Stelzig drew the start lasting 2.2 innings before being replaced by Dylann Baker for 2.1 innings. Amia Alexander-Sims would pitch the final full inning. All pitchers would combine for eight strikeouts.
GAME 2: SWEDES 4, WILDCATS 8
The Swedes would take on the Baker University Wildcats, a team who is receiving national votes, in game two of the day. The Swedes’ offense would come alive in the fifth inning as Emmaline Senecaut would score on a passed ball followed by Addilyn Miller capitalizing on a Wildcat error. Harley Smith would score on yet another error by Baker. Ulissa Rivas would tally the lone RBI for Bethany score Kyson Vap via a hard-hit ground ball to shortstop. The Swedes would fall 8-4.
Paris Hammer got the start in the circle going 3.0 innings before MacKenzie Yoder entered to finish the contest. Both pitchers combined for a total of three strikeouts.
GAME 3: SWEDES 7, PRIDE 1
After a good night of sleep, the Swedes were back in action early against the Clarke University Pride. Avery Newmiller broke the scoreless tie in the third inning via a RBI double that scored Shaylee Keslar and Ulissa Rivas. In response, the Pride would score one in the bottom half of the inning, but would keep it going when they returned to the plate. Ashaya Steele singled home Addilyn Miller to boost the Swedes lead to 3-1. In the fifth, Avery Newmiller would double home Kalee Aguilar followed by a homerun over left field by Emmaline Senecaut to plate Alex Udy, Newmiller, and herself. The Swedes would win 7-1.
Dylann Baker earned the win pitching 6.0 innings allowing just five hits and one run while striking out three. Amia Alexander-Sims pitched the final inning allowing just one hit but facing only three batters.
GAME 4: SWEDES 5, MUSTANGS 13
The final game of the classic started rough as the Mustangs rattled off nine in the first inning. Avery Newmiller would put Bethany on the board with a two-run bomb over center field also scoring Ulissa Rivas. In the fourth, Rivas would send one over left field to score Gabriella Nigro and Shaylee Keslar to cut the deficit to four, but Mount Mercy would tack on four in the fifth to win this one 13-5.
Ayianna Revels earned the start but only lasted 0.2 innings. The trio of MacKenzie Yoder, Paris Hammer, and Jordyn Stelzig would each enter in relief.
