McPherson County Commission Meeting 08/19/24 Highlights

McPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — McPherson County Commissioners held the canvass for the August 6th primary election during Monday’s meeting. County Clerk Hollie Melroy said only 14 percent of McPherson County’s registered voters cast ballots in the election, where there were no contested races for democrats, and just a few contested Republican races, one of those involving a County Commission seat.
Melroy reviewed for Commissioners the various write-in votes that were cast, which often are how some township officers are nominated onto the November general election ballot.
Commissioners set public hearing for Sept.16 on a request by New Gottland Township to designate a township road as minimum maintenance. This involves 13th Avenue between Pioneer and Pueblo Roads, the south end of which is a mile west of the McPherson Country Club.
Designation of the road as minimum maintenance would reduce potential liabilities for the township. Public Works Director Tom Kramer said some years ago a bridge was removed on this road, and there’s a low water crossing on it now. It if were up to Kramer he would permanently close that road.
Commissioners have approved reappointment of three members of the McPherson County Planning Board to new three-year terms starting Jan. 1.
- Glenda Taylor, the designee of Commissioner Keith Becker, appointed to a second term
- Lori Bower, the designee of Commissioners David O’Dell, appointed to a second term
- Kathy Nicholson, the designee of Commissioner Tom Kuesner, appointed to her third and final term
Planning and Zoning Administrator Jon Kinsey said two Planning Board members will complete their third term at the end of 2025, and replacements will have to be selected for them.
Sheriff Jerry Montagne introduced a new corrections officer to Commissioners during their meeting Monday, and said he will have another to introduce next week. Montagne said deputies made 16 arrests last week, with the current Jail census at 48 with just two female inmates, with 41 being held for district court and nine for municipal courts.
During the meeting Commissioners approved renewal of the Class A private club license for McPherson Country Club.
