McPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson City Commission has approved installation of a fire hydrant at Station 2 on North Main. While not included in the original construction plans, the amount of training taking place at that station led to a need for a hydrant, which the Board of Public Utilities will install for $33,000.
The Commission also approved the sale of a truck, trailer and bulldozer belonging to the Fire Department to BPU for a like amount of $33,000, with the intent to have this equipment in a place where is can be used and maintained regularly.
The start dates for a new firefighter and firefighter/EMT were advanced from Aug. 18 to Aug. 4 in order to allow them to participate in a road rescue training CHS is putting on next month, that won’t be offered again under 2027.
Updates on the three current street projects
- In the 1100 block of North Elm concrete was placed at the Loomis Street intersection last week, with 250 feet of curb placed on the southeast side. Crews are setting up concrete forms for the next curb section.
- On Myers Street, curb and gutter has been finished in the 800 and 900 blocks, with millings ready to be added in the 800 block and backfill work in the 900 block is up next. The Valley gutter on the north end of the 900 block has been finished and intersection poured.
- Milling has been completed on Maxwell north of 1st, and patching will begin shortly if it hasn’t started already.
The Commission approved a water lantern festival to be held by STEPMC Sept. 20. They will be placing lanterns with battery operated lights on the water and then clean those up at the end of the event using a canoe with organizers agreeing not to enter the water.
The Commission also waived rental fees for the Red Cross Blood Drive earlier this week at the Community Building and were informed of approval of a Visitor Attraction Grant for the McPherson Museum’s Haunted House event in October.
