Field athletes from the Barton Community College track and field program took the road south to Norman today, competing in the 24th annual JD Martin Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma at the Mosier Indoor Track & Field Facility.

Chavez Penn headlined the effort with a breakthrough showing in the high jump, clearing a personal-best 2.10m (6-10.75) to place second overall. The mark not only improved upon his previous national qualifying clearance of 2.08m (6-08.75) set last weekend at the Corky Classic but also vaulted the freshman into Barton’s record book, tying for the 10th-best performance in program history.

Across both squads, Barton combined for double-digit personal and/or season-best performances and multiple national qualify marks.

Behind Penn’s record-book clearance, Barton’s men’s field athletes recorded multiple competitors inside the top five while piling up personal and season-best marks across throwing and jumping events.

Jaylan Mclloyd led the Cougars in the long jump, placing fifth at 7.20m (23-07.50), reaffirming his already-secured national qualifying standard. Skylan King followed closely in seventh with a season-best 6.99m (22-11.25), continuing Barton’s consistent presence in the horizontal events.

In the shot put, Barton made noise in both sections. Jaylon Calder highlighted the A section with a runner-up effort of 16.25m (53-03.75), a season best to complement his national qualifying mark, while DeAndre Bristol added a fourth-place finish at 14.80m (48-06.75). The B section saw Tucker Anderson capture the title with a personal-best throw of 12.33m (40-05.50), while Gabe Daugherty chipped in a fourth-place effort at 11.75m (38-06.75).

The weight throw proved especially productive, with Calder delivering another standout performance by placing second with a personal-best and national qualifying mark of 17.85m (58-06.75). Ilia Ciui, also previously qualified, was closely in third with a personal best 17.65m (57-11.00) heave. Daugherty’s personal best placed eighth (14.52m, 47-07.75), Bristol in 11th (13.13m, 43-01.00), and Anderson finishing 15th (12.81m, 42-00.50).

On the women’s side, Barton continued to stack personal progress, highlighted by a national qualifier sharpening her form and multiple throwers producing season-defining efforts.

Jahmeka Brown delivered the Cougars’ top placement of the day on the women’s side, earning a third-place finish in the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 1.68m (5-06.00) to better her national qualifying standard. Destany Johnson also competed in the event, gaining valuable experience despite recording no height.

In the long jump, Makiya Mosley represented Barton with an 18th-place effort of 5.07m (16-07.75).

The throwing events saw steady improvement across the board. In the shot put A section, Zadie Mackey placed eighth with a mark of 12.34m (40-06.00), while Shamoye Morris followed closely in ninth with a personal-best throw of 12.29m (40-04.00). Morris also competed in the B section but recorded no mark.

Progress continued in the weight throw, where Shamoyea Morris led Barton with a seventh-place personal best of 14.36m, followed by Mackey in eighth at 14.25m, with Shamoye Morris added another personal best to the Cougars’ totals with a ninth-place effort of 13.60m.

Barton returns to action January 30–31, traveling to Topeka, Kansas, for the two-day Washburn Open held at Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.
