The No. 5 Barton Community College men’s track and field team turned in one of its most impactful early outdoor performances Friday, delivering a deep and dynamic showing at the SPC Alumni Elite Invitational hosted by South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.
Fueled by four program top-10 marks, twelve new national qualifying performances, and six personal bests, the Cougars showcased their depth across sprints, hurdles, and field events in a statement outing.
Leading the charge on the track, Trevoy Smith delivered one of the meet’s top performances, leading a strong Barton showing in the 400m hurdles with a victory in a national qualifying 50.48, moving into 3rd all-time in program history. Craig Prendrgast finished runner-up in a qualifying 52.91, while Nizer Smith placed fourth in 54.63 in his first attempt at the event.
The 400m group was equally dominant, adding another record book entry as Simeon Adams clocked a personal best 45.98 to finish runner-up and move into 9th all-time. Furious Trammel placed third (46.96) and Emmanuel Adams finished fourth (47.08), both securing national marks, while Taigon Peterkin added a personal best 48.18 to place sixth.
In the short sprints, Devonric Mack and Aragorn Straker went 2-3 in the 100 meters with national qualifying times of 10.42 and 10.43, while Smith added a qualifying performance in the 110m hurdles (14.46), adding to his fourth-place finish in the 400m hurdles.
The middle distance group contributed to the qualifying haul as Shavan Jarrett placed second in the 800 meters at 1:50.37, while Macdonald Jansen added a personal best 1:53.94.
Barton’s field events delivered a commanding presence as well, led by Chavez Penn‘s victory in the triple jump with a personal best 16.17m, moving into 8th all-time in program history. Devon Williams captured the long jump title with a national qualifying mark of 7.43m.
The throws group continued the momentum as Ilia Ciui improved his 4th all-time position on the program list with a personal best 59.49m to win the hammer throw, while Jaylon Calder added a discus victory with a personal best 53.75m mark to further his qualifying standing. DeAndre Bristol contributed with a personal best 52.30m in the hammer for third while also placing runner-up in the javelin (56.16m).
Closing out the meet, Barton’s 4x400m relay “B” team of Peterkin, Shavan Jarrett, Macdonald Jansen, and Prendrgast posted a national qualifying time of 3:13.01 to finish runner-up, while the “C” unit added a fourth-place finish in 3:26.06.
The Cougars will continue their outdoor campaign Thursday, April 9, traveling to Canyon, Texas, for the Jo Meaker Classic & Multis.
