Aris Rodriguez delivered a historic performance for the Cougars, pouring in a game-high 38 points while joining the program’s exclusive 1,000-career point club. After opening Barton’s scoring with a three-pointer, the sophomore guard connected on 12-of-20 shooting, including four triples, and went 10-of-12 from the free throw line while scoring Barton’s final 11 points to lead the Cougars through the tournament thriller.
Barton controlled much of the first half, building a 14-point advantage behind strong perimeter shooting and second-chance opportunities. A three-pointer from Pavel Ivanov with 4:17 remaining stretched the Cougars’ lead to its largest margin of the half, while the sophomore’s eight first-half points provided a key lift off the bench as Barton carried a 47-37 lead into the locker room.
Cloud County responded with a surge in the second half, erasing the deficit and eventually tying the contest at 59 with just over 14 minutes remaining. Each time the T-Birds threatened down the stretch, Rodriguez answered with key baskets, helping Barton maintain a narrow edge in the closing minutes.
The drama escalated in the final seconds. After Cloud County forced a turnover with nine seconds remaining, Rodriguez jumped a pass near midcourt and was fouled on a breakaway with four seconds left. Shortly after the foul, however, a technical was assessed on Rodriguez during the sequence, setting up a chaotic finish. Rodriguez calmly converted both free throws from the initial foul to put Barton ahead by three before Cloud County’s Syncere Burnette answered by sinking both technical free throws. Needing to go the length of the floor, Burnette got off a running three-point attempt at the buzzer, but the shot missed its mark as Barton escaped with the one-point victory.
Rodriguez’s 38 points paced the Cougars while Noah Williams added a 16-point, 12-rebound effort for his sixth double-double. Sebastian Muchitsch chipped in 14 points and six rebounds, while Brian Sullivan, Jr. contributed 11 points and Ivanov added eight points off the bench. Barton connected on 11 three-pointers, shot 75 percent from the free throw line, and produced 21 second-chance points while committing just 12 turnovers.
Burnette led the T-Birds with 22 points while Manasseh Stackhouse added 20 points and 12 rebounds. Kaidan Chatham scored 14 points off the bench and D’ontez Walker chipped in 11. Cloud County shot 50.8 percent from the field and scored 44 points in the paint but could not overcome 16 turnovers in the narrow defeat.
