A late bad bounce spoiled the No. 9 Barton Community College men’s soccer team’s bid for victory Saturday afternoon, as a 76th minute own goal forced a 1-1 draw with Coffeyville Community College at Great Bend’s Cavanaugh Field.
The result leaves the Cougars at 2-2-1 in conference play and 6-3-2 overall while the Red Ravens stand at 0-1-2 in league action and 4-3-2 on the year. Concluding a three match in four day stretch, Barton will have the weekend off before traveling Tuesday to Scottsbluff, Nebraska for a 1:30 p.m. (CT) kickoff at Western Nebraska Community College.
The Cougars broke through late in the first half, capitalizing in the 38th minute when Masaki Tsuji‘s initial shot inside the box was blocked but rebounded to Rafael Calmon, who buried his fourth goal of the year.
Controlling long stretches of possession and outshooting Coffeyville 18-8, Barton pressed for an insurance tall but couldn’t convert. The missed chances proved costly with just under 15 minutes left, as a free kick grazed off a Cougar defender’s head and redirected into the net for the tying goal.
Barton generated a pair of late chances but came up empty trying to reclaim the advantage. Calmon finished with a match high five shots, while Tsuji added one on frame to go with his first half helper.
In net, Keagan Lewis stopped two shots in the draw, while Coffeyville’s Tsubasa Nakmura posted four saves to preserve the result.
