A late push came up short Wednesday night as the Barton Community College men’s basketball team fell 81–76 at Independence Community College.

The loss drops the Cougars to 5–5 in Jayhawk Conference play and 10–6 overall, while the first-place Pirates improve to 7–2 in league action and 9–5 on the season, snapping Barton’s four-game winning streak at Independence’s Fieldhouse.

Barton continues its two-game road swing Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. tip at Seward County Community College in Liberal. The Cougars return home Saturday, January 17, hosting Cowley College in a 7:30 p.m. contest on Hall of Fame Induction Day.

Barton struck first with the game’s opening four points and later held a three-point edge at 21–18 with 9:34 remaining in the first half. Independence responded with ten straight before the Cougars countered with a seven-point burst to knot the score at 28. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, but the Pirates closed the final two minutes with six straight free throws to carry a 40–35 lead into the break.

The Cougars stayed within striking distance through the opening six minutes of the second half before Independence was able to stretch the margin to ten on three occasions. Barton answered with an 8–0 run over a two-minute span to pull within two at the 8:30 mark, but a trio of turnovers allowed the Pirates to rebuild an eight-point cushion with four minutes remaining.

Barton continued to press, trimming the deficit to four with 2:43 left and again inside the final minute, but Independence sealed the outcome by converting 9-of-10 free throws in the closing stretch to secure its first home win in the series since 2021.

Despite the setback, Barton controlled the glass, winning the rebounding battle by twelve and outscoring Independence 40–24 in the paint. The Cougars also pulled down 16 offensive rebounds, leading to a nine-point edge in second-chance scoring. Turnovers proved costly, however, as Barton’s 19 miscues resulted in a seven-point differential for the Pirates.

Four Cougars reached double figures, led by Aris Rodriguez with 16 points, all coming after halftime. Jayden Ramirez followed with 14 points, while Sebastian Muchitsch and Brian Sullivan, Jr. chipped in 13 apiece. Reigning KJCCC Player of the Week Noah Williams paced the rebounding effort with 11 boards to go along with eight points, as Muchitsch added eight rebounds.

Independence was led by David Wilson and Sterling Knox with 19 points each, the duo combining to shoot 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Trashuan Combs-Pierce and Lonnie Bass, Jr. rounded out the Pirates’ scoring in double figures with 10 points apiece.
