BARTON/PAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. — There will, barring write-ins, be just one contested election in Pawnee County this year. That is in Burdett where four people are seeking three slots on the City Council. There was one filing for every other city and school position by the time the filing period ended at noon Monday.
It was a different story in Barton County, where a primary election will be required in August for one Great Bend City Council position. This is in Ward 2 where Stephen Patton, Suresh Bahadur Maharjan, Charlie Dixon and Jay Luerman filed.
There will also be a contested race in November for Great Bend Mayor where Alan Moeder and David Jiminez are seeking to succeed Cody Schmidt, and for Wards 1 and 3 on the Council with one filing in Ward 4.
Hoisington has a three way race for Mayor with Chris Kinman, E. D. Blivens and Scott Fleming running, with single filings for the four council seats. Ellinwood had single filings for mayor and two council positions, Claflin for three council spots, and Pawnee Rock three for three council positions. There were no filings in Albert, Galatia, Olmitz, or Susank, and seven filed for Barton Community College Trustees.
Four candidates filed for three seats in both Great Bend USD 428 and Hoisington USD 431, with three for three spots in Ellinwood USD 355. Two filings were made for two spots each in the Ellinwood Hospital District and Cottonwood Extension District.
