Allen softball began conference play this weekend against Fort Scott Community College (7-17).
In the first game of the doubleheader, FSCC jumped out to a lead in the top of the third inning after two RBIs, leading 2-0.
ACC responded quickly in the bottom of the third as Addie Keys hit a single to center field. Taylor Damme cranked a home run over the leftfield wall, tying the game 2-2 going into the fourth inning.
The Red Devils made another rally in the bottom of the fourth started off by Hope Sanchez with a single down center field. Sanchez advanced to second off of a sacrifice by Casey Schaffer. Ella McCammon doubled on a hard ground ball to right field, allowing Sanchez to cross home plate. Kara Walker singled on a hard ground ball to right fielder, as McCammon scored. ACC led going into the fifth 4-2.
Fort Scott tied up the game yet again in the top of the fifth inning, while ACC was able to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a single down third base by Sanchez, scoring Makayla Hirschmann.
Both teams were held scoreless in the rest of game one, while ACC would take the win 5-4. Andrea Ruby pitched all seven innings for the Red Devils pitching 61 strikes and 107 total pitches.
Similar to game one, FSCC tallied the first two runs on the board in the top of the third inning off of two walks and a double, leading 2-0.
ACC responded by scoring all four of their runs during the bottom of the fourth. Walker, Keys, and Abernathy got on base off of a pop fly and two walks. Hirschmann hit a hard ground ball and reached on an error by shortstop, allowing Keys to score. Sanchez and Harper Desmarteau advance the runners off of a single on a line drive to left fielder, and sacrifice fly to left field. ACC led 4-2 going into the fifth.
ACC defense was able to keep Fort Scott scoreless for the final two innings, taking game two 4-2, and completed a double header sweep.
Allen softball is now 9-18 (2-0) on the season, and sits third in the KJCCC standings. The Red Devils will face off against the No. 11 ranked Labette Community College 11-17 (0-4) on April 2. First pitch of the double header is set for 2:00 p.m. at Allen.
