Iola USD 257 to Induct Floyd Smith in Don Bain Hall of Fame

IOLA, Kan. — Longtime Iola educator, coach, and community leader Floyd Smith will be posthumously inducted as the newest member to Iola USD 257’s Don Bain Hall of Fame.

Smith spent 38 years in the district, starting as an industrial arts and physiology and industrial arts teacher in 1927, also coaching football, basketball and track, later becoming athletic director and in 1941 IHS principal, later adding the role of dean of Iola Junior College, the forerunner of Allen Community College, until his retirement in 1965 when he was succeeded by Don Bain.

Smith was named a Kansas Master Teacher in 1965, and also held professional leadership roles, served seven years on the Board of the Kansas State High School Activities Association including three years as president, and outside education with the Iola Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and active in the Methodist Church.

Floyd Smith will be formally inducted at a ceremony on Sept. 26, 2025 at the Bandstand on the Square as part of Homecoming activities.
