IOLA, Kan. — The Iola City Council has tabled to their June 9th meeting a proposal to change the sale date for fireworks. A change in state law extended the dates for seasonal sale of fireworks from the long-standing June 27 to July 5 to between June 20 to July 7.

A major factor in that was the absence of two council members Tuesday, which due to opposition of two Council members would not have had the required five votes to pass an ordinance. In Allen County Humboldt voted to leave the dates as is while Moran has approved the extended date. The Council also tabled to June 9 an ordinance to allow permanent businesses to sell fireworks year-round.

The Council accepted a nearly $76,000 bid from CDL Companies of Pittsburg for a new electronic sign at the entrance to Riverside Park. CDL had the lowest of three bids submitted for the project, which is being jointly funded by the city, USD 257 and the Allen County 4-H Council.

The Council also accepted the sole bid from Vance Brothers of Kansas City for emulsion oil to be used on this year’s chip seal projects, and purchases from Twin Motors Ford for a new F550 truck for the Gas Department and Shawnee Mission Ford for a new Police pickup.

It approved waiver of electric fees and vendor operations during this Summer’s Movies of the Square, use of the Riverside Park Community building for the Allen County Relay for Life June 14 and a curfew waiver to allow organizers to clean up afterwards

Also approved was a beer license for the Pecos League baseball games being played at Allen Community College subject to local and state requirements being met and permitting the Elks to sell beer on their lawn as part of a June 7 Pub Crawl.
