GARNETT, Kan. — The Garnett City Commission Tuesday sent back to the Planning Commission a recommendation for a special use permit that would allow continued used of a property at 1010 South Walnut as a five space RV park.

This park was set up some years ago during a pipeline project to address a lack of available housing. This was an allowed use at the time, but there was nothing found about whether this was temporary or permanent.

The Planning Commission voted 4-0 to support the request, but Commissioners wanted input from the three members absent from the meeting and also input from Commissioner Nate Wiehl who was absent from last night’s meeting.

The commission approved a revised peddler’s ordinance. City Manager Travis Wilson said a number of citizen complaints led staff to take look at it, including solicitors coming to homes late into the evening and on weekends, and one case where peddlers repeatedly went back to one.

Major changes include addition of a $150 application fee, and a background check requirement. Following the vote and during public comment there were some concerns about how this would apply to scout and other youth groups due to the way it was written. .

The Commission received an update on water treatment plant issues, on which Wilson said a compliance report has been submitted to KDHE, and a meeting is in the works to review where things stand.

Wilson also said he and City Attorney Terry Solander are working on how to proceed with issues at 511 South Oak and shared a flier on a proposed half percent sales tax that would fund the swimming pool and other projects.

With respect to the pool, a new filter for it is expected to arrive later this month, it is expected the pool may be closed for a couple of days to allow installation and testing.
