FORT SCOTT, Kan. — Freeman Health System’s Fort Scott Hospital is now in business. It opened its doors Thursday upon completion of its Kansas Licensure Survey. The ten bed hospital and 24-hour emergency room is located in the at one time Mercy Hospital.
In a statement Freeman said this milestone reflects the incredible teamwork, dedication, and shared vision of the entire Freeman team and Community, expanding access to high quality, compassionate Care, and continuing to grow stronger as an organization.
Mercy Hospital closed in 2018, and in 2022 a plan by another group to re-open the facility fell through. Ascension Via Christi briefly operated a standalone emergency room which closed in 2023.
In May 2024, Bourbon County Voters approved a quarter percent sales tax to fund an emergency room, and the following month Freeman announced plans to reopen the emergency room and the hospital.
