CHANUTE, Kan. — The Chanute City Commission has approved a change in the original ballot question to impose a sales tax for economic development activity. When it was originally approved last month, the proposed sales tax rate was set at .125 percent, however state law requires tax rates to be set in increments of two places ending in either zero or five.
On recommendation of the Chanute Regional Development Authority the revised question will set the tax rate at .15 percent. Previously CRDA had been funded through an existing quarter cent sales tax, which is now dedicated to the Depot renovation project.
The Commission accepted the 2024 audit presented by Noel Phillips of Jared, Gilmore and Phillips, who reported the city received an unmodified, or clean opinion as it related to cash basis law requirements. The only violation noted involved a legal publication made one day later than required by law.
Commissioners approved leasing of the restaurant at Stone Creek Golf Course to Amy Callahan’s Outsiders Bar and Grill. The city has been seeking a new lessee since April, and Callahan submitted an offer last week. No renovation work will be required prior to her taking over, with the first-year rent reduced to assist with start-up costs.
The Commission approved resolutions ordering abatement of code violations on seven properties, one of which the owner was given 60 days to make repairs. One other property that was on the list was pulled since the abatement is already done.
Commissioners were also informed that new trash carts are being distributed to residents on Wednesday trash routes starting this week, and they are on track to have all seven thousand carts distributed by the end of the year.
