ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — Newly elected Allen County Sheriff Anthony Maness is starting the process of transitioning into the new position which he officially assumes January 13. Maness discussed this with Allen County Commissioners Tuesday, and as part of this he will be attending a New Sheriff’s School the first two weeks of December at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center near Hutchinson.

Maness said he is planning to meet with department staff during their off-duty hours to discuss the transition. Part of that is the designation of a new undersheriff, and he has asked a couple of people outside the organization to assist in the interview process.

The flight check of new lighting at Allen County Regional Airport ended up not costing anywhere near what was expected. Public Works Director Mitch Garner told Commissioners they had paid $29,000 for the check, which is part of FAA certification requirements for recent runway work, but it only ended up involving 2.1hours of work, and with that the county will get a refund of around $23,000.

On other airport matters, Garner said apron work will proceed once things dry out, and electrical installation for the new hangar will commence once a power pole is placed to serve the building, which is now fully enclosed.

Road and Bridge Supervisor Jeremy Hopkins reported only minor washout issues from last week’s rains, similar to what was seen the week before, and gave an update on a grader purchase being made this year to avoid a 2025 price hike.
