Allen County Commission Meeting 4/15 Highlights
ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — Allen County Commissioners Tuesday again discussed a new policy under which the landfill will be closed in the event of high winds, such as during high wind. Those winds blow a lot of stuff out of the landfill, which Public Works Director Mitch Garner said he has two seasonal employees out picking up trash with a third to come on board shortly. Commissioner Jerry Daniels suggested a policy be put in place that closes the landfill during high wind events. That blowing trash problem is also causing issues for a nearby farmer, which Garner is going to contact to work on.
Commissioners also reviewed updates to the county’s solid waste plan, an annual update on which is submitted to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
House and Grounds Director Ron Holman discussed with Commissioners the possibility of replacing the sidewalk in front of the Courthouse. Holman said there are a lot of patches on that sidewalk with chunks out of it which creates a trip hazard. Holman will be getting quotes which will be brought back next week. He also discussed a request from the Humboldt Senior Center for assistance in replacing existing carpeting in their building with tile flooring, for which quotes will also be obtained.
Commissioners discussed payment options on four trucks being purchased for the Road and Bridge Department . Following a discussion between them, supervisor Jeremy Hopkins and the vendor, the Commission opted to do lease-purchase on all four trucks.
Hopkins in his report said crews have been working on patching potholes and constructing the pad for another hangar at Allen County Airport. Also discussed was purchase of a mower max with a rotary cutter head for tree work, action on which will be taken next week.
County Clerk Shannon Patterson presented a letter from Jared Gilmore and Phillips, their audit firm, related to their work on the hospital bonds, done annually and signed.
The Commission also approved a request from Parents as Teachers for a pocket flower planting on June 11 from 4-6 p.m.
