IOLA, Kan. — The Allen County Commission has approved the marketing plans for a proposed half percent sales tax for EMS that’s on the November General Election ballot. It accepted proposals from the Iola Register for quarter page ads that will run in all papers three times and yard signs, and from EDDS for direct mail cards on the proposal, the total cost coming in less than $5,000.
During Tuesday’s meeting Emergency Management Director Jason Trego discussed quotes and options to drill a hole for the pole that will support a new storm siren in Mildred, SBA loan availability for those impacted by the April flood, signed an application for a state emergency management performance grant, and discussed options to mount an amateur radio repeater.
The contractor for the sewer project to Allen County Regional Airport is coming back earlier than planned. Public Works Director Mitch Garner told Commissioners that the crew, which had not planned to be back until the first of October is back on site, as a corn field the lines will go through has been harvested.
Garner also reported the liner at the new landfill cell has passed inspection, and with that rock cover for it should start soon. Garner noted the project, on which a 60-day extension for completion was recently approved, work is a little behind
Road and Bridge Director Jeremy Hopkins said chip seal work has been completed in Moran, with work is Gas now being done, after which they will move on to Humboldt. Hopkins and Commissioners also discussed future road plans, including a potential project on 1400 Road or the old US 169.
The chip seal work in Humboldt is scheduled to begin Friday, and the city of Humboldt says this will involve work on 2nd, 6th, 11th, 12th, Charles, Neosho from 9th to 12th, Central from 2nd to 9th, Pecan and Sycamore. Residents are asked to avoid these construction areas as much as possible, noting following construction there will be oil and loose rock on these roads. The Humboldt projects are expected to be completed within a week.
