ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — Allen County Public Works Director Mitch Garner told County Commissioners Tuesday a final walk-through on the Landfill expansion project is scheduled to take place Thursday with a KDHE Representative. Most of the punch list items have been taken care of save the well issue.

Garner said bids will be going out for noxious weed chemical purchases and he also updated on pickup purchases including one for noxious weeds. He also provided updates on work on a new airport hangar, for which the door has been installed and repairs to a track hoe, which should be back in later this week or the first part of next week.

Grinding work resumed Tuesday on 600 Road, after which Road and Bridge Director Jeremy Hopkins said crews will begin work on chip sealing of 42 blocks of streets in Humboldt, and after that they will be doing seal work on Hawaii Road bridges. This will pretty much take care of their major projects for the year.

Hopkins said he’s been in contact with Bettis on road work in the Petrolia area but had not heard anything back yet. There was also discussion about the potential of some sort of lighting for a storm shelter in Petrolia, where additional rock is being brought in at the request of residents.

Allen County expects to begin the switchover to a new notification system around the first of October. Emergency Management Director Jason Trego told Commissioners the current contract with Code Red runs through January 3rd, 2026, and Trego said messaging will be sent out through Code Red about the impending change which will provide a system more aligned to the needs of Allen County. We’ll have more on that as we get closer.

Commissioners approved a $1,500 funding request for next month’s 67th Biblesta Celebration in Humboldt, the same amount as in past years. After that approval. Resident Arlyn Briggs made a suggestion that they look at possibly including annual requests as part of the budget process so they can be approved at one time at the start of the year.

During a meeting that took all of 18 minutes, Commissioners also gave approval to a temporary liquor license application for a Phoenix Foundation Fundraiser October 10th at Liberty Landing between Iola and Humboldt, use of the Bandstand for a revival event October 6th-12th, and permission to place team and purple ribbons on the courthouse lawn during September as part of Suicide Awareness Month.
