Allen County Commission Conducts Election Canvass, Breaks Two Ties

ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — The main order of business for Allen County Commissioners Monday, and the only real matter of business save executive sessions for attorney/client matters, was the canvass of last week’s election, which makes official the results including the write-in winners for a number of offices and in two cases breaking of ties.

The ties came in City Council elections in Gas and Savonburg, each having four people tied for the last available position. Commissioner John Brocke drew names out of a jar to select the winner, which was George Grisier in Gas and Nora Lewis in Savonburg.

In Iola’s Ward 1 Doug Kerr was elected on a write-in for the seat now held by Josiah D’Albini who did not seek another term and where nobody else filed. In Humboldt, Tim Francis was elected to Position 3 in Ward 1 and Doug Ames to Position 4 in Ward 2. There were no candidate filings for either of those seats.

County Clerk Shannon Patterson said of nine provisional ballots cast, seven were able to be accepted. Of the two that were not, one was not registered, and one was registered in another county. Five of the seven provisionals were from people who had moved within the county but did vote a correct ballot, and two involved name changes that were not yet reflected on the voter rolls.
