ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — The Allen County Commission Tuesday evening approved the budgets for the county, three fire districts and two sewer districts and the resolutions for each to exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate. During public hearings on the budgets, there was considerable discussion on a number of issues, most notably property valuations which is a sore spot for many taxpayers. County Commissioner John Brocker noted during the discussion he is part of a committee.
Commissioners discussed a variety of road maintenance issues including concerns about roads in the Petrolia area and how road reconstruction is done in general. Road and Bridge Supervisor Jeremy Hopkins said he is discussing with Bettis Asphalt and Construction the potential of them doing some work around Petrolia while they have equipment in the area for a project just inside Neosho County later this year.
Hopkins said most of their work currently is centered in Carlyle and along Texas Road, which is in weather delay, and noted work on Oregon Road is done. He also reported he had purchased a used skid steer for 88 thousand dollars.
Public Works Director Mitch Garner reported on a fireworks-related fire last week in the new pit, which was quickly put out, and gave an update on a hangar construction project at Allen County Airport.
Marcia Davis from Thrive Allen County gave a report on last week’s Community Conversation in Elsmore, where among the topics discussed was how to improve visibility for a couple of local businesses along with development of other business opportunities and improving internet access in the area. The next Community Conversation will be held Sept. 23 in Savonburg.
